LENS was born as an European scientific research centre providing advanced laser and spectroscopic facilities for researchers from European countries and promoting and facilitating the exchange of ideas, scientific techniques, and technical skills.
Several European universities have participated in the organization of LENS, through agreements with the University of Florence.
LENS is directed by an Executive Council, nominated by the participating European institutions, that elects the Director and the Associate Director. The Executive Council is assisted in the planning of the scientific program of LENS by a Scientific Advisory Board, formed by an international panel of experts. The senior research staff of LENS consists of professors from the university of Florence and from other associated universities.
