"Run for Research" by Fiorgen

A special Saturday morning that combines physical activity and science illustration of different physical and biological phenomena.

On Saturday, May 26th, 2012, the 7th edition of "Run of Research" will be held. It is organized by the no-profit Pharmacogenomics Foundation FiorGen and will be setted in the area between the Scientific Park and the green area of Sesto Fiorentino, with the goal of emphasize that scientific research is essential to health and that movement is a vital source of health.

In this edition FiorGen aims to involve especially the middle and high school students, offering a Saturday morning that combines physical activity and science illustration of different physical and biological phenomena, hoping that the participants not only do healthy exercise, but also enjoy the role of scientific research in life sciences.

Everyone can take the opportunity to visit the laboratories of the Center for Magnetic Resonance (CERM), the "da Vinci" European BioBank and some labs of the European Laboratory for Non-linear Spectroscopy (LENS).

Start is fixed at 9.30am in front of the CERM (Via Luigi Sacconi 6, Sesto Fiorentino, Florence). Entertainment for children with special surprises and a race for them will also be organized thanks to Quadrifoglio. Prizes to the first 3 runners, the first 3 schools and many gifts will be provided. The participation fee of 5.00 euros includes a FiorGen t-shirt, massage oils and some discount coupons, as well as refreshment stops. As happened in past editions, raised money will entirely fund scholarships for young researchers engaged in studies on applications that seek to exploit the knowledge of the structure of the human genome to identify targets of more effective and targeted therapies, with the identification of new indicators of disease and response to drugs and the development of innovative drug therapies as part of personalized medicine.
