Phase-locking to a free-space terahertz comb for metrological-grade terahertz lasers

For the first time a rainbow of frequencies in THz range of electromagnetic spectrum is generated, extending the concept of frequency comb to THz lasers.

LENS researchers in collaboration with the National Institute of Optics (CNR-INO), the Institute of Nanoscience (NEST), the National Research Council (CNR), the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Florence and the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa have showed that quantum cascade lasers are, among all lasers based on semiconductors, those which in THz range approach nearer to the ideal concept of a single color laser, and have generated for the first time a rainbow of frequencies, extending the concept of frequency comb to the THz range of electromagnetic spectrum.

Now, thanks to the discovery of spectral purity, it will be possible to build sources with very low noise and therefore high sensitivity in detecting. Potential applications range from telecommunications, security, biomedicine, astronomy, high-resolution spectroscopy, manipulation of cold molecules, and so on.
