Photonic disorder traps light efficiently

LENS anniversary, photonics area: how to take advantage of disorder to design high efficiency photovoltaic panels.

Disorder in matter can induce remarkable interference effects, that may result in phenomena such as Anderson localization. An effect of them can be the increase of the optical thickness of material and so it can be useful to design novel photovoltaic panels.

Disorder can be so used to have broadband, polarization and angular independent enhancement of the optical absorption in thin-films. These studies have given life to a business project and to an idea of spin-off called Lambda Energy.
