An overview on various philosophical aspects behind the concept of the atom; from the idea of infinity to that of the infinite divisibility of matter.
In this seminar I will go into the various philosophical aspects behind the concept of the atom; from the concept of infinity, the possibility to divide something an infinite number of times, and the infinite divisibility of matter. This led historically to two lines of thought, namely that of a view in which matter is continuous and one in which matter was discontinuous. I will give an historical overview of the philosophical developments in this respect and how the concept of discontinuous matter led to the foundation of modern quantum mechanics.
